This Monday, I spent the day with service members and their families in recognition of their sacrifices to our nation. As I’ve traveled around our district each month, I’ve heard from our service members about the ways Congress can help veterans and their families. I am committed to making sure their service and sacrifice is never forgotten. We owe no greater debt than to the men and women who have served our country.

(Washington) -- Iowa Congresswoman Cindy Axne is challenging members of her own party to include money for farmers struggling with tariffs imposed on overseas products in proposed budget bills. Earlier this week, the West Des Moines Democrat urged House Democratic leadership to include extensions for the commodity credit corporation in a continuing resolution so that the USDA can continue payments to struggling farmers. Axne's letter to Democratic leadership was in response to a recent Washington Post report that House Democrats are attempting to block President Trump's farm bailout program in the continuing resolution the House is expected to vote on later this week. Speaking on KMA's "Morning Line" program Wednesday morning, Axne says the tariff aid is included in a measure designed to prevent a government shutdown.

As a Member of Congress, one of my most important responsibilities is to nominate constituents to our prestigious military academies. I am now accepting applications to nominate constituents between the ages of 17-22 to four U.S. service academies: the U.S. Military Academy, the U.S. Naval Academy, the U.S. Air Force Academy, and the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy. These institutions provide college-aged Americans with a tuition-free, four-year undergraduate education and prepare them to be officers of some of our nation's uniformed services. Upon graduation, service academy graduates are commissioned as officers in the active or reserve components of the military or merchant marine for a minimum of five years.

My top priority in Congress is to lower the cost of your health care. I have heard from too many Iowans who have been forced into debt due to medical bills, don’t have access to lifesaving care, or have to choose between paying for their prescription drugs or putting food on the table. Every Iowan and American deserves access to affordable, quality health care.
