WASHINGTON – Today, U.S. Rep. Cindy Axne’s amendment to the bipartisan reauthorization of the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) advanced out of the Rules Committee to the full House for approval. The Axne amendment would increase STOP grant funding for local law enforcement agencies and community organizations to better combat and prosecute violence against women. The House is expected to pass the bill later this week.

WASHINGTON – Today, U.S. Rep. Cindy Axne (IA-03) announced the first day to submit artwork for the 2019 High School Congressional Art Competition. Each Spring, the Congressional Art Institute sponsors the Artistic Discovery Contest to recognize and encourage the artistic talent across the nation. High school students throughout the Third District are invited to submit original pieces of art to Rep. Axne’s office. The final day to submit artwork is April 30th.

WASHINGTON – Today, U.S. Rep. Cindy Axne (IA-03) urged the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) to authorize emergency relief programs to assist Iowa farmers impacted by the severe flood. President Trump’s disaster declaration allowed for the USDA to authorize specific recovery programs, including Emergency Watershed Protection (EWP) program and the Emergency Conservation Program (ECP), which are vital to helping Iowa farmers recover and rebuild. On March 25th, USDA announced the authorization of these programs for Nebraska farmers. In a letter sent today to USDA Secretary Sonny Perdue, Rep. Axne requested the agency immediately authorize these programs in Iowa as well.

Cindy Axne (IA-03) invited the Secretaries of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) to accompany her on an April 6th tour of the flood damage in Southwest Iowa. As the Secretaries of two vital agencies that handle disaster recovery, Rep. Axne requested they survey the damage in order to fully understand the scope of federal assistance needed to rebuild these rural communities.

Washington, D.C. – Today, Iowa’s three Democratic Representatives, Dave Loebsack (IA-02), Abby Finkenauer (IA-01) and Cindy Axne (IA-03) called on the Department of Justice to drop its effort to strike down the Affordable Care Act (ACA), which would lead to the loss of patient protections, including for those with pre-existing conditions, reopening the prescription drug donut hole, removing the ban on lifetime limits and taking away the ability for young adults to stay on their parents’ health insurance until 26. In a letter to Attorney General William Barr, Loebsack called on the administration to halt its efforts to strike down the ACA.
