Press Release

Washington, D.C. – Today, Congresswoman Cindy Axne (IA-03) sent a letter to the Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) Philip Kiko, directing the CAO to withhold her paycheck until the government is re-opened.

I do not believe that it is appropriate for Members of Congress to receive paychecks while Iowa families suffer and our security is compromised due to government dysfunction,” Congresswoman Axne wrote.

Dear Chief Administrative Officer Kiko,

As a lapse in appropriations and partial government shutdown enters its third week, Members of Congress are still receiving their paychecks. Part of the duties and responsibilities of the Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) include providing accounting, benefits, and paychecks for Members of the House of Representatives and the Senate. Therefore, given your direct oversight, I am asking that you withhold my paycheck until further notice.

Iowans working as Air Traffic Controllers, Transportation Security Agency (TSA) Agents, Bureau of Prison Guards, certain positions within the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), and many more are asked to continue to protect our communities without receiving their paychecks. During this shutdown, hard-working Iowans cannot apply for small business loans within the Small Business Administration, farmers may not receive their direct loan payments or disaster assistance, and some terrorism and crime programs are halted, threatening the safety of our communities.

I do not believe that it is appropriate for Members of Congress to receive paychecks while Iowa families suffer and our security is compromised due to government dysfunction.

I am committed to working with my Republican and Democratic colleagues in order to re-open the government as soon as possible. This shutdown effects all Iowans, and Iowans deserve better than this dysfunction in Washington.

Sincerely,

Cindy Axne

Member of Congress
