New grant from Land and Water Conservation Fund enables Iowa Department of Natural Resources to build 40-site campground at State Park in Council Bluffs

Today, Rep. Cindy Axne (IA-03) welcomed a new $1,279,000 grant from the Land and Water Conservation Fund (LWCF) to support the construction of a new campground at Lake Manawa State Park in Council Bluffs.

The new grant comes less than one month after legislation cosponsored by Rep. Axne to permanently fund the LWCF was signed into law.

“This LWCF matching grant will provide our district with another great way to take advantage of Iowa’s natural wonders and enjoy the trails, swimming, boating and other activities offered at Lake Manawa State Park,” said Rep. Axne. “Less than one month after we secured permanent funding for the LWCF, it’s great to see a tangible example of why it was so essential to ensure this fund was no longer subject to expiration or underinvestment.”

The LWCF matching grant covers half the cost for the Iowa Department of Natural Resources to complete the project, which will include full power and sewage hookups for 40 sites and a new shower and restroom facility.

In addition to permanently providing $900 million annually for the LWCF, the Axne-sponsored Great American Outdoors Act contains $9.5 billion over five years to support repairs at America’s parks and other public lands.

In February 2019, Rep. Axne voted to permanently reauthorize the LWCF. That measure became law on March 12, 2019.

Lake Manawa State Park covers 1,529 acres surrounding the 772 acre lake – and is one of the most popular outdoor recreation facilities in the Council Bluffs area. The Park offers hiking and bike trails, boating ramps, swimming areas, and ample opportunities for fishing.
