Rep. Axne on Stalled Disaster Aid Bill
WASHINGTON – Today, U.S. Rep. Cindy Axne (IA-03) released the following statement after a House Republican blocked final passage of the bipartisan disaster supplemental funding bill that would provide much-needed aid to Iowa communities hit by devastating flooding in March:
“I am beyond fed up. This is wrong. This bill is about helping people – not about playing Washington politics. Congress needs to do its job and pass this bill. Iowans deserve better than this,” said Rep. Axne.
Congresswoman Axne was instrumental in adding $3 billion in funding for Midwest floods in the bipartisan legislation. Following the May 10 House introduction of the disaster aid bill, Rep. Nita Lowey, Chairwoman of the House Appropriations Committee said of Rep. Axne, “Thanks to her strong voice on this issue, we have included $3 billion to meet needs in the Midwest – including $500 million in emergency assistance for farmers.” The bill also included Axne provisions to increase funding for the Emergency Watershed Protection Program and the Federal Highway Administration Emergency Relief Program.
A timeline of Rep. Axne’s efforts to help Iowan’s rebuild and recover following the devasting March flood is available here.
