“For the past two months, Iowans have been fighting outbreaks of COVID-19 around our state and working to ensure that our hospitals, health systems, and front line workers have the protection they need to keep us healthy and safe – and the State of Iowa has taken on much of the financial burden of that fight,” said Rep. Axne. “I’m glad to see this award of federal emergency funds coming in so we can continue that fight, but we need more robust systems in place to safeguard our state and local budgets from being left without support as they see rising costs and declining revenue because of this pandemic.”

New federal grant program would help prevent cuts to essential local services including education and public safety
“I’ve spoken to our mayors, councilmembers, city planners, and county leaders across central and southwest Iowa – and all of them have expressed deep concern about their fiscal health after coronavirus required them to halt many of the activities that help support their vital services,” said Rep. Axne. “Our firefighters, teachers, police officers, and other municipal workers – and the towns they support – should not have to bear the burden of budget cuts after taking the necessary steps to slow the spread of coronavirus in Iowa. Letter calls on FEMA to re-open grant programs after volunteers with Shenandoah Fire Department reported difficulties and weeks of delay
“Protecting our firefighters and frontline responders, in particular those with largely volunteer staff, is crucial to protecting the public safety in our rural communities,” said Rep. Axne. “I’ve heard from local governments and first responders like the volunteers from Shenandoah Fire Department who are under enormous strain due to COVID-19 – they’re the same folks who rely on grants to continue their invaluable work. We need to re-open grant applications, cut red tape, and streamline this process so these essential services can access the funding they need.”
